Where TashiCell reaches in Bhutan, from Paro to the high passes

Yes, an eSIM works in Bhutan. Ours connects to TashiCell at 4G, and TashiCell's 4G has reached every district headquarters since 2018. Bhutan has only two mobile operators and our plan uses one of them. So it pays to know where TashiCell's coverage stops, and to plan some offline time if you are trekking.

01 TashiCell or Bhutan Telecom: which network is your eSIM on?

It's on TashiCell, run by Tashi InfoComm, which launched in 2008 as Bhutan's first private mobile company. The other operator is Bhutan Telecom. Our plan does not switch to Bhutan Telecom, so TashiCell's coverage is the one that counts for you, even if a friend's phone shows better signal.

Both are large for a country this size. On 30 June 2026 the regulator, BICMA, counted 521,281 mobile subscribers on Bhutan Telecom and 309,730 on Tashi InfoComm. TashiCell also launched 5G in Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing in December 2021, but our plan connects at 4G, so expect 4G speeds in those towns too.

02 Where does TashiCell 4G reach, and where does it stop?

TashiCell says its 4G has covered all 20 dzongkhag (district) headquarters since December 2018. That includes the towns most itineraries use, such as Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Jakar in Bumthang. It is a promise about district towns, not about every trail and high pass between them.

Long treks leave those towns behind. The Snowman route alone takes three to four weeks. Download offline maps and your itinerary before you set off, and tell someone at home when you expect to be back in range. The plan's days keep running while you are out of signal, so size it for the whole trip.

03 Is a TashiCell tourist SIM cheaper than an eSIM?

On price, yes. TashiCell's tourist SIM costs Nu 300 for 2 GB over 14 days, or Nu 500 for 3 GB over a month, and both include talk time. The eSIM costs more, but it works as soon as you land at Paro, needs no counter visit and leaves your home SIM in the phone.

To compare the same amount of data, our 3 GB lasts 15 days for $9.31 or 30 days for $9.88. TashiCell also sells unlimited tourist packs at Nu 1,100 for 7 days and Nu 1,900 for 14 days. A local SIM gives you a Bhutanese number as well, which our plan does not.

04 Do you need unlimited data in Bhutan?

Only if you stream, upload a lot of video or share your connection every day. Our unlimited plans give full speed up to 1 GB or 3 GB a day, then up to 1 Mbps for the rest of that day. For maps, messages and photos over a week, a fixed plan costs less.

  Plan Price
A few nights in Paro and Thimphu1 GB, 7 days$3.49
One heavy day, such as a festival1 GB a day, unlimited, 1 day$4.20
A week with daily video uploads1 GB a day, unlimited, 7 days$29.40
Up to two weeks, normal use3 GB, 15 days$9.31
A month, or touring plus a trek5 GB or 10 GB, 30 days$15.51 or $31.01

If you are unsure how the slower speed feels once the daily allowance runs out, read what unlimited really means on an eSIM.

05 Coming in by road from India through Phuentsholing

The Bhutan plan only works once your phone joins TashiCell inside Bhutan. It does nothing on the Indian side of the border at Jaigaon, so an overland trip needs separate data for India. Phuentsholing itself is covered: it is one of the three towns where TashiCell first launched 5G.

Our India plan covers the Indian leg. Keep both eSIMs installed and switch the active data line when you cross. If you fly in, you land at Paro, Bhutan's only international airport, so that is where the plan will usually connect first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Bhutan eSIM.

TashiCell only. Our plan connects to TashiCell, run by Tashi InfoComm, and never switches to Bhutan Telecom. BICMA's June 2026 figures give Bhutan Telecom more mobile subscribers, but that makes no difference to you: your data works wherever TashiCell has signal.

No, expect 4G. TashiCell has run 5G in Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing since December 2021, yet this plan stays on 4G throughout Bhutan. That still handles maps, messages and video calls, and TashiCell has had 4G in every district headquarters since 2018.

Plan as if you cannot. TashiCell's 4G pledge is for the 20 district headquarters, and long routes such as the Snowman spend three to four weeks away from them. Leave your route with someone at home, and remember the plan's days keep counting while you are out of range.
