Philippines eSIM: Why One Network Is Not Enough Across 7,000 Islands

Globe and Smart have not built out the same islands, which is why locals carry both and why a single network eSIM is excellent on some islands and frustrating on others. Ours reaches both. This guide covers coverage island by island, compares our prices with Airalo checked on the day of writing, answers the unlimited data question honestly, and says when a local SIM is the better buy.

01 Which networks does a Philippines eSIM use?

Ours reaches both of the country's major networks, Globe and Smart, on 5G. Your phone picks whichever is stronger where you are and switches without you doing anything.

That matters here more than in most countries. The Philippines is seven thousand islands, and Globe and Smart have not built out identically. On one island Globe will be the one that works, on the next it will be Smart, and locals routinely carry both.

A plan that reaches only one of them is a plan that is excellent half the time. Most travel eSIMs sold for the Philippines carry a single network, and the ones sold through booking sites are usually Smart only.

02 Will it work in Palawan, Siargao, Cebu and the islands?

In Cebu, Boracay, El Nido, Coron, Siargao and the places tourists actually go, yes. Those are covered and you will mostly be on 4G with 5G in the cities.

Between them is where it varies, and where carrying both networks earns its keep. Boat crossings, the smaller islands, the inland parts of Palawan and the mountain roads all have gaps, and the gaps are not in the same places for Globe and Smart.

  • Manila, Cebu City, Davao: strong, 5G widely available
  • Boracay, El Nido, Coron, Siargao: good in the towns and at the main beaches
  • Inland Palawan and the road to El Nido: patchy, expect stretches with nothing
  • Island hopping boats: assume no service once you are away from the coast
  • Banaue, Sagada and the mountain provinces: thin on every network

Download offline maps before any island hop or long van transfer. That is good advice here whoever you buy from.

03 How much does a Philippines eSIM cost?

The whole fixed range with the price per gigabyte worked out.

Plan Price Per GB
1 GB for 7 days$1.49$1.49
3 GB for 15 days$3.08$1.03
3 GB for 30 days$3.28$1.09
5 GB for 30 days$5.14$1.03
10 GB for 30 days$9.37$0.94

Worked out on 21 September 2026. Philippines trips tend to run two weeks or more because of the travel time between islands, so the 10 GB plan at $9.37 is the realistic choice for most itineraries.

04 How does our price compare with Airalo?

Checked on 30 September 2026 in US dollars on Airalo's own Philippines page.

Plan MegaEsimBest choice Airalo
1 GB$1.49 (7 days)$4.00 (3 days)
3 GB$3.28 (30 days)$8.00 (7 days)
5 GB for 30 days$5.14$12.00
10 GB for 30 days$9.37$19.00

Prices move. If one of these is cheaper on the day you read this, buy the cheaper one.

05 What is the best unlimited data plan in the Philippines?

Honestly, for a visitor, probably none of them. This comes up constantly in searches and the answer is less exciting than people hope.

Local unlimited offers from Globe and Smart are aimed at residents on contracts or at prepaid customers who top up regularly, and the genuinely unlimited ones carry fair use limits that throttle hard. Travel eSIM unlimited plans for the Philippines are expensive relative to how much data you will actually use.

Fixed data is the better buy here. Ten gigabytes covers a two week island trip for most people, and at $9.37 it costs less than most unlimited plans charge for a week.

06 Should I buy a local SIM in the Philippines instead?

For a stay of a month or more, yes. Globe and Smart prepaid SIMs are cheap and sold everywhere, including at the airports.

There is a registration requirement for local SIMs now, done through the operator's app or site with an ID, and travellers do sometimes get stuck on it. It is not as difficult as India, but it is no longer the walk up and buy experience it used to be.

For two or three weeks of island hopping, the eSIM is simpler and the price difference is small in absolute terms.

07 Is it worth getting an eSIM for the Philippines?

Coming from outside Southeast Asia, yes. Roaming here from a European, North American or Gulf contract is expensive, and you will use data constantly for ferry schedules, Grab, and messaging the people arranging your transfers.

Arrival matters too. Manila and Cebu airports are busy, transfers are usually pre arranged over messaging apps, and landing without data means finding wifi before you can tell anyone you have arrived.

  • Worth it: arriving from outside Southeast Asia
  • Worth it: island hopping, where plans change and you need to message people
  • Worth it: you land late, which many long haul flights into Manila do
  • Probably not: a month or more, where a local prepaid SIM wins once registered
  • Probably not: a resort stay where you will not leave the property

08 How much data do you need in the Philippines?

Two weeks of island hopping usually lands between 6 GB and 12 GB, because you will be messaging constantly to arrange boats, vans and rooms.

How you travel A week Two weeks Plan to look at
Maps, messaging, Grab2 to 3 GB4 to 7 GB$5.14 for 5 GB
Add photos and social4 to 6 GB7 to 12 GB$9.37 for 10 GB
Add video calls home6 to 9 GB12 to 18 GB$9.37 for 10 GB

Set photo backup to wifi only before you fly. Diving and beach trips generate a lot of photos and that one setting saves several gigabytes.

09 Do I get a Philippine phone number?

No. These are data plans, so no number and no texts or calls to a normal number. Messenger and WhatsApp work over the data, and in the Philippines Messenger is what almost everyone uses, including boat operators and guesthouses.

That is genuinely convenient here. Most of the arranging you will do on a trip happens in Messenger, and a data plan handles all of it.

Keep your home SIM on for bank codes with its data roaming turned off.

10 Do I turn data roaming on or off?

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. The instinct to leave it off is backwards and it is the most common reason a working eSIM looks broken.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on a Philippine partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming permanently. With the setting off it shows signal and moves no data. It is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM on for texts with its own roaming off.

11 How do I install a Philippines eSIM?

Five minutes on wifi before you fly, with the QR code we email after payment.

  • Check the phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID
  • Open the QR code on a second screen or print it
  • iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
  • Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM
  • Label it Philippines
  • Set it as the line for mobile data and switch its data roaming on

On arrival in Manila or Cebu allow a few minutes to register. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode once, then check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data. If it still fails, select a network manually and try the other of the two.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

12 When does my Philippines plan start counting?

When the eSIM first connects to a Philippine network, not at purchase and not at install.

Install at home before you fly. Philippine itineraries slip more than most, because ferries and small aircraft are weather dependent, and a plan bought for Tuesday is not wasted if you arrive Thursday.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than 24 hour blocks.

13 Can I share the connection with a laptop?

Yes, hotspot and tethering work on every plan here and come from the same allowance.

Guesthouse wifi in the islands is often slow or intermittent, so people tether more here than they expect to. If you are working at all, take $9.37 for 10 GB rather than the 5 GB.

14 Who should not buy this plan

If you are staying a month or more, buy a Globe or Smart prepaid SIM and complete the registration. It will cost less over that period than any travel eSIM including ours.

If your trip is a resort week where you will not leave the property, the hotel wifi covers you for nothing.

And if your phone is carrier locked, nothing here will work. Check with *#06# before you buy.

15 The honest verdict on a Philippines eSIM

For a two or three week island trip this is the right product, and $9.37 for 10 GB over 30 days is the plan we would point most people at.

The reason to pick one that reaches both Globe and Smart is not marketing. It is that this is an archipelago where the two networks have genuinely different island coverage, and locals carry both for exactly that reason. A single network eSIM will be excellent on some islands and frustrating on others.

For a long stay, a local prepaid SIM wins on price once you have worked through the registration, and we would rather say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both majors, Globe and Smart, on 5G. That matters in an archipelago because the two networks have genuinely different island coverage and locals routinely carry both. Most travel eSIMs sold here carry only one.

Yes in the towns and at the main beaches, mostly 4G with 5G in cities. Inland Palawan, the road to El Nido, island hopping boats and the mountain provinces all have gaps, and the gaps differ between Globe and Smart.

For a visitor, usually none of them. Local unlimited offers are aimed at residents and carry fair use throttling, and travel eSIM unlimited plans are expensive relative to what you will use. Ten gigabytes covers a two week island trip for most people.

For a month or more, yes. Globe and Smart prepaid are cheap and sold everywhere, but SIM registration is now required through the operator's app with an ID and travellers sometimes get stuck on it. For two or three weeks the eSIM is simpler.
