Landing at Luanda's new airport: getting online on Unitel

You can use an eSIM in Angola, and ours runs on Unitel's 4G network, the one carrying about three in four of the country's mobile lines. What sets Angola apart right now is the airport. International flights land about 40 km outside Luanda, so data that works from touchdown matters more than usual.

01 Is Unitel a good network to be on in Angola?

For a visitor it is the obvious one, because it carries most of Angola's mobile subscriptions. Figures from the regulator INACOM for 2025, reported by Telecompaper, give Unitel 73.3% of mobile subscriptions, Africell 25.5% and Movicel 2%. Our plan connects to Unitel on 4G.

Unitel has started 5G, mostly in Luanda, with smaller pockets in Benguela, Lobito and Huambo. This plan does not use 5G, so your phone will show 4G even where locals see 5G. For maps, messages, email and video calls, 4G does the job.

02 What changed with Luanda's new international airport?

International flights into Luanda now use Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, about 40 km south east of the city centre. TAAG moved its international flights there in October 2025, and by March 2026 all scheduled passenger flights had left the old Quatro de Fevereiro airport.

That longer ride into town is where working data pays off. With the eSIM installed at home, you can switch it on as you land, message your hotel or driver, and follow the route on a map before you leave the terminal.

03 How far does 4G reach once you leave Luanda?

Less far than in the capital, so expect time on 3G and 2G. A February 2026 analysis of nPerf coverage data by PTI found 4G made up over 70% of Unitel's coverage in Luanda. In the eastern Lunda provinces and Moxico it was no more than 22%, with 2G at about 38%.

The same analysis put more than 60% of Unitel's coverage in southern Angola on 2G and 3G. On a road trip south or east, download offline maps and save bookings while you still have a strong signal. If pages crawl, our guide to slow data abroad lists the phone settings worth checking.

04 Does the plan cover Cabinda?

Yes. Cabinda is an Angolan province, so it is part of this plan, and Unitel is there too: it switched on 5G in Cabinda municipality in August 2025. The catch is geography, because a strip of the Democratic Republic of the Congo separates Cabinda from the rest of Angola.

Going by road therefore means crossing Congolese territory, and this plan gives no data there. The plan works again once you are back in Angola.

05 Which Unitel plan suits your trip?

Choose by trip length first, then by how much you upload. All five plans run on Unitel 4G and are data only. Look closely at the two 3 GB options: the price gap between 15 and 30 days is small, so if your return date might slip, the longer one is the safer buy.

Much bigger. Regulator figures for 2025, reported by Telecompaper, gave Unitel 73.3% of Angola's mobile subscriptions, Africell 25.5% and Movicel 2%. Our plan connects to Unitel on 4G, so you are on the network behind nearly three quarters of the country's mobile subscriptions.

No, this plan runs on Unitel's 4G only. Unitel's 5G is mostly in Luanda, with smaller pockets in Benguela, Lobito and Huambo, but your phone will show 4G on this plan even there. For maps, messages and video calls, 4G is plenty.

Yes. Cabinda is an Angolan province, so the plan covers it, and Unitel runs a network there. The catch is the road: a strip of the Democratic Republic of the Congo separates Cabinda from the rest of Angola, and the plan gives no data on that stretch.
