India eSIM: Why a Local SIM Is Hard for Visitors, and What Ours Actually Costs

Jio and Airtel both sell eSIMs and both are far cheaper than anything on this page. The reason most visitors do not buy one is KYC: identity and address verification against Indian documents, a form, and a wait. This guide covers that honestly, names the network we run on, compares our prices with Airalo checked on the day of writing, and says plainly when you should go and get a local SIM instead.

01 Which network does an India eSIM use?

Ours runs on Airtel. That is worth knowing because India has three networks that matter, Jio, Airtel and Vi, and they are not interchangeable once you leave the big cities.

Airtel and Jio are the two with serious national reach. Jio built out 5G aggressively and is strong almost everywhere. Airtel is close behind, with a reputation for holding up well in the cities and along the main corridors where visitors actually travel.

For a trip built around Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Goa or Kerala, Airtel will not be the thing that lets you down. If you are going deep into rural Himachal or the northeast, expect any network to thin out, and expect Jio to sometimes hold on where others do not.

02 Can I buy an Indian eSIM from the USA, or before I arrive?

Not a local Indian one, no, and this is the question that sends most people to a travel eSIM in the first place.

Jio and Airtel both sell eSIMs, and both are cheap, but they are sold to people who can complete Indian KYC. That means identity and address verification against Indian documents or a passport and visa presented in person, plus a form, plus a wait while it is processed. It is not something you complete from your sofa in Chicago two weeks before you fly.

A travel eSIM like ours is a different product with a different trade. It costs more per gigabyte than an Indian prepaid plan and it asks nothing of you beyond a working phone. You buy it, you scan a code, and it connects when you land.

03 What are the disadvantages of an eSIM in India?

Three real ones, and it would be dishonest to lead with anything else on a page selling you the thing.

  • It costs more than a local Indian SIM, often several times more per gigabyte. Indian data is among the cheapest in the world and we cannot match it
  • No Indian phone number, so no OTP codes from Indian services. This matters more in India than almost anywhere, because so much runs on SMS verification
  • Your phone must be carrier unlocked and eSIM capable, and a surprising number of phones sold in India itself are not

The second one deserves emphasis. If you need to verify an Indian bank account, a local delivery app, a railway booking or anything else that texts a code to an Indian number, a data only eSIM cannot do it. That is a reason to get a local SIM, not a reason to avoid an eSIM, and plenty of travellers carry both.

What you get in exchange is no paperwork, no queue, no address to supply, and working data the moment you land at three in the morning at Indira Gandhi.

04 How much does an India eSIM cost?

Here is the whole fixed range with the price per gigabyte worked out.

Plan Price Per GB
1 GB for 7 days$2.70$2.70
3 GB for 15 days$7.14$2.38
3 GB for 30 days$7.20$2.40
5 GB for 30 days$11.20$2.24
10 GB for 30 days$20.44$2.04

Worked out on 21 September 2026. We will say the quiet part out loud: an Indian prepaid SIM will give you far more data than this for the money. A local plan with a daily allowance runs to a few hundred rupees a month. Nothing on this page competes with that on price and we are not going to imply otherwise.

What this competes with is other travel eSIMs, and the roaming rate on your home contract, which for India is usually severe.

05 How does our price compare with Airalo?

Checked on 30 September 2026 in US dollars on Airalo's own India page.

Plan MegaEsimBest choice Airalo
1 GB$2.70 (7 days)$4.00 (3 days)
3 GB$7.20 (30 days)$9.50 (7 days)
5 GB for 30 days$11.20$14.00
10 GB for 30 days$20.44$24.00

Saily lists India from $3.99. Between travel eSIMs the gaps are real but none of them is the size of the gap to a local Indian SIM.

Prices move. If one of these is cheaper on the day you read this, buy the cheaper one.

06 Should I get a local SIM instead?

If you are staying more than about three weeks and you can face the paperwork, yes. The money saved is not marginal.

You will need your passport and visa, a passport photo in some shops, a local address which can be your hotel, and patience. Activation is not instant and can take hours or occasionally into the next day. Airport counters exist at the major international airports and charge a premium for the convenience.

  • Staying over three weeks, and want heavy data: local SIM
  • Need an Indian number for OTP codes: local SIM, or carry both
  • Two week holiday or a business trip: travel eSIM is simpler and the price gap is small in absolute terms
  • Arriving late at night and need transport sorted: travel eSIM, working before you reach the taxi rank
  • Want zero admin on a trip that is already complicated: travel eSIM

Carrying both is common and sensible. An eSIM for data from the moment you land, and a local SIM picked up in the first few days if the trip is long enough to justify it.

07 How much data do you need in India?

More than you expect, because you will use maps constantly and ride hailing apps are how you get around in every large city.

How you travel A week Two weeks Plan to look at
Maps, messaging, Uber and Ola2 to 4 GB5 to 8 GB$11.20 for 5 GB
Add photos and social4 to 7 GB8 to 13 GB$20.44 for 10 GB
Add video calls home7 to 11 GB14 to 20 GB$20.44 for 10 GB

Set photo backup to wifi only before you fly. In India that single setting routinely halves what people use, because it is a country you photograph constantly.

08 Is eSIM available in India?

Yes. eSIM works normally in India, the major networks support it, and there is no restriction on a visitor using a travel eSIM on an unlocked phone.

The confusion usually comes from the other direction: people find that getting a local Indian eSIM is hard, and conclude that eSIM itself is restricted. It is not. The difficulty is the KYC process attached to any Indian mobile connection, physical or digital.

Check your handset rather than the country. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number. Phones bought in India are less consistently eSIM capable than the same models sold elsewhere.

09 Can I still use WhatsApp with an eSIM?

Yes, and this is the reassurance most people are actually looking for. WhatsApp runs over data, and it stays tied to the number you originally registered it with, which is your home number.

So your WhatsApp works exactly as it does at home, with the same account, the same chats and the same number visible to your contacts. You do not need an Indian number for it and you should not re register it with one.

The same is true of Telegram, Signal, FaceTime and normal video calling. What a data plan cannot do is receive an SMS code sent to an Indian number, which is a different problem.

10 Do I turn data roaming on or off in India?

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. This catches out more travellers than anything else and the instinct to leave it off is exactly backwards.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on an Indian partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming permanently. With that setting off, the eSIM shows a signal and passes no data. It is per line, so your home SIM is not affected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, and leave your home SIM on for texts with its own data roaming off. That way your bank codes still reach you.

11 How do I install an India eSIM?

Five minutes on wifi before you fly, with the QR code we email you after payment.

  • Check the phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID
  • Open the QR code on a second screen or print it, a phone cannot scan its own screen
  • iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
  • Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM
  • Label it India
  • Set it as the line for mobile data and switch its data roaming on

On arrival allow two or three minutes to register. Indian airports are busy and first registration can be slow. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode once, then check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

12 When does my India plan start counting?

When the eSIM first connects to an Indian network. Not at purchase, not at install. Buy weeks ahead and install days ahead with nothing running down.

Install before you fly. It is the step that needs wifi and attention, and doing it at home beats doing it in an arrivals hall after a long flight.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than 24 hour blocks from first use.

13 Will it work in Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and the hills?

In Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and every city and tourist route, yes, and mostly on 4G with 5G in the larger centres.

In the Himalayan states the picture changes, and not only because of terrain. Parts of the northeast and some border areas have restrictions and patchy service that affect every network. Ladakh in particular is known for prepaid connections from other regions not working the way visitors expect.

If your trip includes Ladakh or the far northeast, do not rely on any travel eSIM as your only connectivity. Download offline maps and plan around gaps.

14 Can I share the connection with a laptop?

Yes. Hotspot and tethering work on every India plan here and the data comes out of the same allowance.

If you are working rather than sightseeing, start at $20.44 for 10 GB. A laptop on calls will move through 5 GB faster than you expect, and in India the cheaper answer for a working stay is usually a local SIM once you are settled.

15 Who should not buy this plan

If you are in India for a month or more, get a local SIM. The saving is large enough to be worth an afternoon of paperwork, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you something expensive by omission.

If you need an Indian phone number for OTP codes, a data plan cannot help and no travel eSIM can. That is a local SIM job.

And if your phone is carrier locked, nothing here will work. Check with *#06# before buying, especially if the handset was bought in India.

16 The honest verdict on an India eSIM

For a trip of up to about three weeks, this is the sensible buy and $11.20 for 5 GB over 30 days covers most of them. It works when you land, it needs no documents, and it removes one moving part from a trip that has plenty.

What we will not claim is that it is cheap. Indian mobile data is among the cheapest anywhere and a local prepaid SIM beats every travel eSIM on the planet for value, ours included. If you are staying long enough for that to matter, go and get one.

What we are confident about is being clear that you are on Airtel, being honest that you cannot receive Indian SMS codes on a data plan, and being connected before you reach the prepaid taxi counter.
