Tigo, not Movistar: using mobile data on a Panama trip or stopover

Yes, an eSIM works in Panama. Our plan runs on Tigo's 4G network, which our plan page still lists by its old name, movistar. Panama is also unusual in having only two mobile networks, Tigo and Más Móvil, since Digicel switched off in April 2024 and a 2026 tender for a third operator drew no applicants.

01 Why does our Panama plan say movistar?

Because the network was renamed. Millicom completed its purchase of Movistar Panama from Telefónica in September 2019 and relaunched it as Tigo on 28 August 2020. So your phone may show Tigo while our plan page shows movistar. Both names point to the same network, the one your plan uses.

The other network is Más Móvil. Digicel shut its network on 20 April 2024, after its customers had moved across by number porting. On 11 August 2026 the regulator, ASEP, said its call for a third operator had received no applications. If your phone doesn't connect on its own, pick Tigo manually in network settings.

02 Using data on a Copa stopover in Panama City

Copa Airlines lets you stop in Panama for anywhere from 24 hours to 15 days at no extra airfare, on the way out or back, added when you book with Copa. Our plans line up with that window: 1 GB for 7 days at $4.97 suits a few days in the city, and 3 GB for 15 days costs $13.24.

For a single night, 100 MB for 7 days at $1.29 covers messages and a map or two. If you're only changing planes, keep the eSIM line switched off, because the plan starts when it first connects to a network in Panama. Here is when an eSIM plan actually starts.

  Plan Price
One night, messages only100 MB for 7 days$1.29
Two or three days in the city1 GB for 7 days$4.97
A full 15 day stopover3 GB for 15 days$13.24
A month in Panama5 GB for 30 days$22.06
A month with heavy use20 GB for 30 days$82.77

Daily plans give full speed up to 1 GB or 3 GB per day, then up to 1 Mbps, which still handles messages and maps. One day at 1 GB costs $5.52, which suits a single long day of maps and photos. Over a week, 1 GB a day costs $38.61, so compare it with the fixed plans above before you choose. For most stopovers a fixed plan works out cheaper.

03 Is there any signal in Guna Yala, the San Blas islands?

Some. In December 2019 Millicom, then trading as Movistar, the network our plan uses, brought mobile and internet service to Guna Yala's four corregimientos: Aligandí, Narganá, Puerto Obaldía and Tubuala. Treat signal on the smaller islands as a bonus, and save boat times and offline maps before you leave Panama City.

The same goes for any trip where you'll be off the road network for a night or two, such as boat trips between islands. Download what you need while you still have signal or wifi, including your boat pickup details.

04 Should I buy a local Tigo or Más Móvil chip instead?

You can, but it means a store visit and ID. Since 15 November 2023, every new prepaid line in Panama must have the user's identity registered before it is activated, a rule ASEP brought in to fight extortion, fraud and other crimes. A local line does give you a Panamanian number, which our data only plans don't.

With our plan, calls and messages go over apps such as WhatsApp, and your home SIM stays on for texts. If Panama is one stop on a longer trip, our Latin America plan includes Panama too, from $7.41 for 1 GB over 7 days. Check its country list for your other stops before you buy. The ID rule applies to every operator, so a Tigo or Más Móvil chip needs it either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Panama eSIM.

Yes. Millicom bought Movistar Panama from Telefónica in 2019 and relaunched it as Tigo on 28 August 2020. Our plan page still uses the old name, movistar, while your phone may show Tigo. It is one network, and this plan uses its 4G.

No. Digicel shut its Panama network on 20 April 2024, after its customers moved to other operators and kept their numbers. That leaves Tigo and Más Móvil. The regulator, ASEP, said in August 2026 that its call for a third operator had drawn no applications.

From 24 hours up to 15 days, with no extra airfare, on the way out or back. Copa stretched the limit from 7 to 15 days in 2026, and it applies to new bookings. For a full 15 day stay, 3 GB for 15 days costs $13.24.
