Brunei runs on one shared network. Here's what that means for data

Yes, an eSIM works in Brunei. Ours connects at 5G through DST, listed as DS on our plan page. Brunei is unusual: all three phone brands sell service over one national network run by a company called UNN, so you get the same coverage as locals, whichever brand they use. The only thing to plan around is a hop into Malaysia.

01 What does DS on the plan page mean in Brunei?

DS is DST, the trading name of Datastream Digital, a Bandar Seri Begawan company. Since a 2020 restructuring, the national masts and fibre have belonged to Unified National Networks (UNN), the company that builds and runs the network all three mobile brands sell on. DST, imagine and Progresif all sell service over that one network, so no brand has separate coverage of its own.

5G went live across Brunei on 22 June 2023, announced by the regulator AITI together with UNN and the three brands. UNN runs 5G on 700, 1800 and 3500 MHz, which phone spec sheets list as bands n28, n3 and n78. If your phone stays on 4G, check whether it supports those bands.

02 How far does signal reach beyond Bandar Seri Begawan?

Most places people live are covered. When 5G launched in June 2023, AITI said 90% of populated areas already had masts ready for 5G, and UNN says it is still extending coverage into rural areas. Because there is only one network, a dead spot is a dead spot for every brand.

UNN publishes a coverage map on its website, which is worth checking before a long drive or a stay in the rainforest. Download offline maps for those days either way, so directions still work if the signal drops.

03 Do you still cross Malaysia to reach Temburong?

No. Temburong is separated from the rest of Brunei by Malaysia's Limbang district, but the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge, opened in 2020, now links them directly. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and stays inside Brunei the whole way, so you never leave the area your plan covers.

The old road through Sarawak took more than two hours. Anyone who still goes that way, or visits Limbang town, is in Malaysia, where the Brunei plan does not work. Temburong's big draw is Ulu Temburong National Park, more than 500 square kilometres of old rainforest, so download maps before you head in.

04 Heading to Miri or Sabah by road: what happens to your data?

Your Brunei plan stops as soon as your phone moves onto a Malaysian network, because it covers Brunei only. For Miri in Sarawak, Limbang, or the long road to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, add a Malaysia plan and switch data lines at the border.

If Brunei is one stop on a longer route, our Global eSIM includes Brunei and starts at $10.64 for 1 GB over 7 days. Check that its country list covers every other place you are going.

05 DST's Easi Tourist SIM or an eSIM?

It depends on how long you stay and whether you want a local number. DST's Easi Tourist pack costs B$15 for 3 GB of local data plus B$3 of call credit, valid for 7 days from activation. You buy it with your passport at DST's airport branch, on the right as you leave arrivals.

Our 3 GB runs for 15 days at $10.65 or 30 days at $11.31, connects when you land, and leaves your home SIM active for bank texts. The tourist SIM gives you a Brunei number, which our plan does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Brunei Darussalam eSIM.

None of them, because all three sell service over one national network. Since a 2020 restructuring, Unified National Networks has built and run the masts every brand uses. Our plan connects through DST, shown as DS on the plan page, so your signal matches what locals get on any brand.

Most populated areas are covered. At the June 2023 5G launch, the regulator AITI put 5G ready coverage at 90% of populated areas, and UNN says rural expansion is ongoing. Since every brand shares the same masts, a local SIM will not reach places our plan cannot.

Yes. Temburong is part of Brunei, so the plan covers it wherever the national network reaches. The bridge from the main part of the country stays inside Brunei the whole way. Only the old road through Sarawak, or a visit to Limbang town, puts you in Malaysia and off the plan.
