Rwanda on Airtel 4G, and when the Africa plan is the better buy

Our eSIM gives you data in Rwanda on Airtel's 4G network. Rwanda has just two mobile networks, MTN and Airtel. The detail that changes the buying decision is our Africa plan. If Rwanda is one stop on a longer East Africa trip, it covers Rwanda on the same Airtel network and also works in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

01 Airtel or MTN: what does being on Airtel mean?

It means you are on the smaller of Rwanda's two networks, though size is not the same as signal. RURA's figures for March 2026 give MTN 66.3% of mobile subscriptions and Airtel 33.7%. Airtel also runs its own 4G network, which only became possible in 2023.

From 2013 all 4G in Rwanda ran on one shared network, KT Rwanda Networks, under a 25 year deal between the government and Korea Telecom. After the regulator opened 4G to other companies, KT Press reported that Airtel switched on its own 4G on 22 July 2023, ahead of MTN. At that launch Airtel said its 2G and 3G reached 94% of the population.

02 Adding Uganda or Kenya to your Rwanda trip?

Then look at our Africa plan before buying this one. It covers Rwanda on Airtel 4G, the same network as this plan, and also Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and DR Congo, so one eSIM keeps working across those borders. The Rwanda plan stops giving data once you leave the country.

There is even a visa built for that route. Rwanda's immigration service says the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, lasts 90 days and allows multiple entries while you stay within the three. Compare sizes and prices on our Africa eSIM page.

03 What does a local SIM involve for a visitor in Rwanda?

More than handing over cash at a counter. Under RURA's 2024 SIM registration regulation, a visitor must show the passport used to enter Rwanda, have fingerprints verified with the immigration directorate, and have a live photo taken. The SIM is only switched on after those checks pass.

The same regulation allows one SIM per network for anyone registering with a foreign passport, and a tourist's SIM is switched off five days after their visa expires or is cancelled. A local line does give you a Rwandan phone number, which a data only plan does not. If you want one as well, bring your passport to the shop, because the SIM cannot be activated without it.

04 Rwanda plan sizes, and how the Africa plan compares

All six Rwanda plans run on Airtel 4G and are data only. Start with the number of days you will spend in the country, then the gigabytes. If you are also crossing into Uganda or Kenya, check the Africa prices under the table before you choose.

Your trip Plan Price
A few days in Kigali1 GB for 7 days$5.43
Two weeks around the national parks3 GB for 15 days$14.48
A month, mostly messaging3 GB for 30 days$15.37
A month with photos and video calls5 GB for 30 days$24.12
Remote work10 GB for 30 days$44.03
Heavy use or a shared hotspot20 GB for 30 days$90.47

For the two sizes both plans share, the Africa plan costs $5.15 for 1 GB over 7 days and $13.75 for 3 GB over 15 days. The matching Rwanda plans above cost $5.43 and $14.48.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Rwanda eSIM.

Airtel. Our Rwanda plan connects only to Airtel's 4G network, so that is the name to look for in your network settings. MTN is the bigger operator, with 66.3% of mobile subscriptions in RURA's March 2026 figures, but this plan cannot use it, even where MTN shows more bars.

Plan for some gaps. When Airtel launched its own 4G in July 2023, it said its 2G and 3G networks reached 94% of Rwanda's population. That figure counts people, not forest roads or park tracks. Save offline maps and lodge directions while you are still in Kigali.
