Getting Online in Papua New Guinea: What Actually Works for Travellers

A MegaEsim Papua New Guinea eSIM is $3.88 for 1 GB over 7 days. Airalo's closest plan is $7.00 for 1 GB that expires in 3 days, checked 30 September 2026, so you pay about half for more than twice the validity. It runs on Digicel, the network most of the country actually uses, and installs from a QR code before you fly.

01 Can I buy a SIM card in Papua New Guinea?

You can, and Digicel sells prepaid SIMs at Port Moresby airport and in town. The catch is the registration. PNG requires SIM cards to be registered to an identity document, so you queue, hand over your passport, wait for the paperwork, and only then get online.

A travel eSIM skips that. You install it at home, land at Jacksons airport with data already working, and can order a car or message your hotel before you have cleared the terminal. For a country where arranging pickup in advance genuinely matters, being connected on arrival is worth more than the few dollars saved.

02 What does an eSIM for Papua New Guinea cost?

Prices checked 30 September 2026 in US dollars on each provider's own Papua New Guinea page.

10 GB$31.44 for 30 days$41.00 for 7 daysunlimited only
Unlimitedfrom $4.31 a daynot offered$53.50 for 7 days

The validity is the part worth reading twice. Our 3 GB runs for 30 days where Airalo's runs for 7, and our 10 GB month costs less than their 10 GB week. Holafly sells only unlimited here at $53.50 for seven days.

Our unlimited plans run at full speed up to the daily allowance, then continue at up to 1 Mbps. Every unlimited travel eSIM has a daily limit. Ours is written on the plan.

03 Which network will my phone use in Papua New Guinea?

A MegaEsim Papua New Guinea eSIM runs on Digicel. That is the practical answer for a traveller, because Digicel has by far the widest reach in the country, including many provincial towns that other operators never reached.

Airalo's own Papua New Guinea page also lists Digicel, so on network there is nothing between us. The difference is what you pay and how long the plan lasts.

04 Where does coverage get thin in Papua New Guinea?

Port Moresby, Lae, Mount Hagen, Madang and Kokopo have solid service, and so do the main airports and the roads immediately around the larger towns.

Away from those, expect nothing for long stretches. The Highlands beyond the main settlements, the Sepik river region, the Kokoda Track and most of the smaller islands have little or no mobile coverage on any network. This is not a limitation of eSIM, it is the state of the country's mobile infrastructure, and any provider claiming full national coverage here is not being straight with you.

Plan for it. Download offline maps, agree meeting points in advance, and treat a signal outside the towns as a bonus rather than something to depend on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Papua New Guinea eSIM.

Yes. A MegaEsim Papua New Guinea plan connects to the Digicel network and installs from a QR code before you travel.

Local prepaid SIMs must be registered against an identity document, which means a counter, your passport and a wait. A travel eSIM avoids that entirely, since you buy it online before you fly.

Ours at the time of writing. 1 GB is $3.88 for 7 days, against $7.00 at Airalo for 1 GB that expires after 3 days, checked 30 September 2026.

Our plans are data only, so you get no Papua New Guinea phone number for local calls or SMS. Your phone must support eSIM, which you can check by dialling *#06# and looking for an EID. And no eSIM creates coverage in the Highlands or on the outer islands, where there is often no network at all.
