Staying online in Monaco while we have no plan for it

No, we do not sell a data plan for Monaco right now, and none of our regional plans includes it. Monaco also works differently from the French Riviera around it. It runs its own mobile network, Monaco Telecom, and since March 2024 phones on French networks connect to it as roaming users inside the Principality.

01 Can I buy a MegaEsim plan for Monaco?

Not at the moment. We have no plan on sale for Monaco, and neither our Europe plan nor any other regional plan of ours covers it. We would rather tell you that plainly than sell you data that might stop working once you cross over from France.

Our other country and regional pages list the exact networks and countries each plan covers, so you can check before you buy. Our Europe plan, for example, covers France and Italy along the Riviera, but not Monaco itself. If we add Monaco, the plans will appear on this page.

02 Why phones switch to Monaco Telecom at the border

Because Monaco runs its own mobile network. Since 5 March 2024, customers of French operators are connected to Monaco Telecom as roaming users when they enter the Principality, rather than staying on their French network. Orange customers already worked this way before the change.

The government said it made the switch because mobile use keeps growing in a densely populated place with limited frequencies. Its advice to French users is to turn data roaming on and leave network selection on automatic, or pick Monaco Telecom by hand.

The cost is a separate question. Monaco is not in the EU and is not on the EU's roam like at home list. The rules that make data in France cost the same as at home do not cover it. Monaco's government says most French operators include Monaco in their Europe zone, but still asks users to check with their operator. We explain the same gap for Switzerland and Andorra in the European countries EU roaming leaves out.

03 Staying in Nice and visiting Monaco for the day

Sort out France and Monaco separately, because they are two different networks with two different sets of roaming rules. Our France plan is sold for France and suits your days in Nice, Menton or Antibes. It does not list Monaco, so do not rely on it inside the Principality.

For the hours in Monaco, find out what your home operator charges there before you cross, and download offline maps while you still have hotel WiFi. MonacoWiFi, the public network run by Monaco Telecom, has hotspots at public sites such as markets, parks, squares and ports.

Calls work differently too. Monaco has used its own country code, +377, since 1996. All calls between France and Monaco have to be dialled in international format, even from the French towns next door.

04 What the network inside Monaco is like

It has offered 5G since 2019. At the July 2019 launch, Monaco Telecom's president said Monaco was the first state entirely covered by a 5G network, as France 24 reported at the time. Since the 2024 change, visitors on French networks use that same network.

French subscribers see Monaco Telecom at the top of the screen instead of their own operator's name once they are inside. If your phone shows that name, you are roaming, and your home plan's Monaco rates apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Monaco eSIM.

Not right now. Monaco has no plan on sale with us, and it is not part of any of our regional plans either. We prefer to be upfront rather than sell data that could cut out after you cross from France. Should that change, Monaco plans will be listed here.

Because since 5 March 2024, phones on French networks join Monaco Telecom as roaming users inside the Principality. Monaco's government pointed to growing mobile use, a dense population and limited frequencies. When your screen shows Monaco Telecom instead of your French operator, your home plan's Monaco rates apply.

No. Monaco is outside the EU, and the roam like at home rules do not reach it, so no EU price cap applies. Monaco's government says French operators mostly count Monaco in their Europe zone, yet it still advises checking with your own operator before you go.
