Mayotte guide · 5 min read

Will your phone work in Mayotte, and do you need a separate plan?

Yes, an eSIM works in Mayotte, and ours runs on Orange, with 5G listed in our catalogue. Orange was the first network there to offer 5G. The twist is Mayotte's status: it is a French department inside the EU, so a French mobile plan already works there at home prices. A separate plan helps if yours comes from further afield or runs short.

01 Does a French or EU phone plan already cover Mayotte?

A French plan does. Arcep, the French telecoms regulator, says customers travelling between mainland France and Mayotte are charged as at home, although operators may set a fair use limit on mobile data. Mayotte has been an EU outermost region since 1 January 2014, and Belgium's Proximus, for one, lists it in its EU roaming zone.

So check your allowance before you fly. If your operator caps data in the overseas departments, or your SIM comes from outside the EU, a plan bought ahead keeps the cost fixed. Ours are data only and run next to your home line, so 10 GB for 30 days at $5.99 can top up a French plan that runs short.

02 How has Orange's network held up since Cyclone Chido?

It has been rebuilt and upgraded. On 16 December 2024, days after Chido, 51 of Orange's 54 mobile sites in Mayotte were out of service, either destroyed or cut off from power. Orange then replaced equipment on 56 sites and switched on 5G on 18 April 2025, saying it reached 80% of the population.

Arcep gave all three networks on the island, Orange, SFR and Only, 5G spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band that same month. Our plan uses Orange only. You get 5G with a 5G phone in an area Orange covers; otherwise the plan uses Orange's 4G.

Orange has also announced a two year plan to add sites beyond the 56 where it replaced equipment. If you're staying outside Mamoudzou, Arcep's Mon Réseau Mobile site publishes coverage maps for Mayotte by operator, so you can look up Orange's signal at your address before you book.

Chido also showed how much the masts rely on mains power. During storm warnings, keep offline maps and the address of where you're staying saved on your phone.

03 Getting online between Dzaoudzi airport and Mamoudzou

Switch the eSIM line on as soon as you land. Mayotte's airport is at Pamandzi on Petite-Terre, while Mamoudzou is on Grande-Terre, and the barge is the only link between them. It leaves about every 30 minutes and the crossing takes 15 minutes, so you'll want maps and messages working before you board.

The Wushia976 app shows barge times live and sells tickets for crossings from Grande-Terre to Petite-Terre, which helps on the way back to your flight. Install the eSIM at home over wifi. Its days start when it first connects to a network in Mayotte, not when you install it.

04 Which Mayotte plan suits your stay?

A fixed plan is enough for a short visit. 1 GB for 7 days costs $1.29 and suits a work trip, while 3 GB for 15 days at $2.10 fits two weeks with family. If you'd rather not count megabytes, daily plans give full speed up to 1 GB or 3 GB each day, then up to 1 Mbps.

  Plan Price
A week of maps and messages1 GB for 7 days$1.29
Two weeks3 GB for 15 days$2.10
A month, light use5 GB for 30 days$3.33
A month, heavy use or hotspot20 GB for 30 days$13.05
A week without countingFull speed up to 1 GB per day, then up to 1 Mbps, for 7 days$6.17

The slower speed after the daily allowance still copes with messages and maps. Our guide on what unlimited means on a travel eSIM shows what 1 Mbps can and can't handle. If you plan to share data with a laptop, go for the 20 GB month plan in the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Mayotte eSIM.

Yes. EU roaming law doesn't apply inside France by itself, so French law extends the same rules to the overseas departments, Mayotte included. Arcep does let operators set a fair use limit on mobile data there. Check your allowance for the overseas departments before you fly.

It depends on your operator, even though Mayotte is part of the EU. It became an EU outermost region on 1 January 2014, but each operator publishes its own list of countries. Belgium's Proximus, for one, includes Mayotte in its EU zone as of October 2025. If your operator's list doesn't name Mayotte, ask before using data there.

Yes, where Orange has 5G and your phone supports it. Orange switched on 5G on 18 April 2025 and said it reached 80% of the population. SFR and Only also won 5G spectrum that month, but this plan connects to Orange only, and it uses Orange's 4G wherever 5G is missing.
