What an Airtel eSIM can and cannot do for you in Madagascar

Yes, an eSIM works in Madagascar. Our plans run on Airtel's 4G network, start at $5.39 and only begin counting when the eSIM first connects there. What sets Madagascar apart is mobile money. MVola and Orange Money need a registered Malagasy number, which a data only eSIM does not give you, so plan how you will pay.

01 Can you use MVola or Orange Money on a travel eSIM?

No. MVola belongs to Yas, the operator that traded as Telma until 2024, and Orange Money belongs to Orange. Both now open accounts for numbers on any Malagasy network, but each account sits on a registered Malagasy phone number and asks for an identity document. A travel eSIM is data only and has no Malagasy number, so neither wallet can use it.

If you want a wallet for your trip, buy a local line at Ivato airport or an operator shop and register it with your passport. Then set up the wallet on that number. Use the travel eSIM for data and maps, and treat the local line as a separate thing you buy for payments.

If you would rather skip the wallet, carry cash and use bank machines in the larger towns.

02 You need WiFi to install an eSIM, and that is the real catch here

An eSIM profile has to be downloaded over the internet before it can work, and your new plan cannot supply that internet itself. Do not plan on finding usable WiFi the moment you land in Antananarivo. If the download fails there, your fallback is a physical SIM from an airport kiosk. Our guide on whether you need WiFi to install an eSIM covers the options.

So install the eSIM at home, on your own WiFi, on the day you buy it. Add the profile, then leave the line switched off until you land. Nothing starts counting while the line is off. When you arrive, turn the line on and turn on data roaming for it, and it attaches to the local network on its own.

If you arrive without having installed it, you are relying on finding WiFi in a hotel or cafe before you have any data at all. That is a bad position to be in after a long flight.

03 Telma or Yas, Orange, Airtel: what actually differs

Madagascar has three mobile networks. Yas, which traded as Telma until 2024, runs the MVola wallet. Orange runs Orange Money. Airtel runs Airtel Money, and it is the network your MegaEsim plan uses, on 4G.

Network Also known as Mobile money Notes
TelmaYasMVolaSells SIMs at Ivato airport
OrangeOrangeOrange MoneyWallet open to numbers on any network
AirtelAirtelAirtel MoneyThe network this eSIM connects to

If your trip is built around remote national parks, ask your guide or tour operator which network works on your route. If it is not Airtel, carry a local SIM on that network as a backup. What a travel eSIM gives you is data that works the moment you land, with no queue and no passport registration.

04 Buying at Ivato airport versus sorting it before you fly

You can buy a local Yas SIM at Ivato airport in Antananarivo, registered against your passport. If you want MVola, or you are heading deep into the parks, that is a sensible thing to buy, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

What it costs you is time and friction at the end of a long flight: finding the counter, registering with your passport, and paying in a currency you may not have yet. An eSIM bought beforehand skips all of that. You can also do both. Use the eSIM for data from the moment you land, then pick up a local line later in the week if you decide you need a Malagasy number.

05 How our Madagascar prices compare

Airalo runs its Madagascar plans on Airtel, the same network this plan uses, so these are like for like on coverage. Checked on 30 September 2026 in US dollars on their own Madagascar page.

Plan MegaEsimBest choice Airalo
1 GB$5.39 for 7 days$7.00 for 3 days
3 GB, 3 days$15.09$17.00
3 GB, 7 days$16.17$18.00
5 GB, 7 days$26.00$27.00
10 GB, 7 days$42.00$43.00
5 GB, 30 days$27.00$28.00
10 GB, 30 days$44.00$45.00

Our 1 GB plan also runs for 7 days rather than 3, so it is not only lower but longer. Competitor prices are a snapshot from 30 September 2026 and do move, so it is worth a look at the exact size and length you want before you buy.

06 Which Madagascar towns have signal, and where it fades

Plan your connected time around the cities: Antananarivo, Toamasina, Mahajanga, Toliara and Nosy Be, plus the larger towns on the RN7. Between them the signal thins out, and inside the big protected areas you should treat your phone as offline.

Treat that as a planning fact rather than a fault with any one network. Download offline maps for the areas you are visiting before you leave the city, tell people at home you may be quiet for a day or two around the parks, and do anything that needs a real connection, such as bank approvals or check in, while you are still somewhere with signal.

07 Nosy Be, the RN7 and the parks: what to expect on each route

Three common routes feel very different for connectivity. A Nosy Be beach week is the easiest, since Nosy Be is one of the larger hubs where 4G is available.

The RN7 road trip from Antananarivo down to Toliara passes through a string of real towns, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Ranohira, so you get regular stretches of signal broken by long quiet gaps between them. Plan to catch up on messages in the towns rather than expecting to be reachable throughout.

A parks focused trip, Andasibe, Ranomafana, Isalo or the Tsingy, is the one to prepare for. Inside the reserves you should assume no data at all, sometimes for a couple of days at a time. Download your maps, your guide notes and anything you need to show at a gate before you leave the nearest town.

08 If the eSIM does not connect when you land

Work through it in this order, starting with the two switches. Check the line is switched on for the MegaEsim plan. Then check data roaming is turned on for that line specifically, not just for the phone, because that single switch is what lets a travel eSIM attach to the local network, and it is easy to miss.

If it is still not connecting, set network selection to automatic and give it a minute, then restart the phone. If you are somewhere with genuinely no coverage, none of this will help, so test it in a town before you conclude something is broken.

Still stuck, message us with your order number and the ICCID shown in your account and we will look at the line from our side rather than guessing.

09 Keeping WhatsApp and your home number working

Your home SIM keeps your number. The Madagascar plan is data only, so it does not give you a Malagasy number and does not replace your normal line. Leave your home line switched on for calls and texts if you want them, but turn data roaming off for it so it cannot quietly run up charges, and let the MegaEsim line carry all the data.

WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and FaceTime all keep working normally, because they travel over data and stay tied to the number you already registered them with. You can also use them to reach guides and drivers who give you a WhatsApp number.

10 Checking entry rules and travel advice before you book

Most visitors need a visa for Madagascar, which you can get on arrival at Ivato or as an eVisa before you fly. Conditions on the ground can change at short notice, so this is worth ten minutes before you commit to dates. We are an eSIM company and not a travel advisory, so we will not tell you whether to go.

Check your own government's current travel advice and the Madagascar entry requirements directly, close to your departure date rather than when you first book. If your plans change, an eSIM you bought but never installed has not started, because the clock only begins when the line first connects to a network in Madagascar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Madagascar eSIM.

A Madagascar eSIM is a digital SIM that gives you mobile data in Madagascar without a physical card. You scan a QR code and a local data plan installs on your phone instantly, no SIM swap and no roaming fees.

Most phones from 2018 onward support eSIM, including recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. Dial *#06# and look for an EID number, and make sure your phone is carrier unlocked.

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Open your phone settings, choose Add eSIM, scan the code and follow the prompts. It takes about two minutes and you can do it before you travel.

Airtel. Your MegaEsim Madagascar plan runs on the Airtel network, on 4G, so there is nothing to choose or set up. Madagascar has three operators: Telma, which now trades as Yas, plus Orange and Airtel.

In Antananarivo, Nosy Be, Toamasina and Mahajanga the signal is steady and fast enough for maps and messaging. Once you reach places like Andasibe or Isalo National Park, or long stretches of the RN7 road, coverage thins out and can drop for a while. Download your maps offline before you leave the last town and a gap in signal will not leave you stuck.

The networks here run mostly on 4G, and that is what you will get on the eSIM in the cities. Telma, now Yas, launched 5G in 2020, but this plan runs on Airtel 4G, so do not count on 5G for your trip. For maps, WhatsApp, photos and calls over data, 4G is plenty.

No. MVola belongs to Telma, which now trades as Yas, and Orange Money belongs to Orange. Both need a Malagasy number registered against an ID document, and a travel eSIM does not give you one. Buy a local line in person if you need a wallet, and keep this plan for data.

For the cities and larger towns, yes. That is where 4G is found, in hubs such as Antananarivo, Toamasina, Mahajanga and Nosy Be. For deep rural travel and the national parks, ask your guide which network works on your route, and carry a local SIM on it if it is not Airtel.
