What to expect from mobile data on the Isle of Man, TT fortnight included

Yes, an eSIM works on the Isle of Man, and ours connects at 4G to Pronto GSM, Manx Telecom's network. Two things set the island apart. It is not part of the UK, so British phone plans can treat it as roaming, and data can slow down when the TT crowds arrive.

01 What is Pronto GSM, and what will my phone show?

Pronto GSM is Manx Telecom's mobile network, and it is the one our plan uses. Manx Telecom says phones usually display Manx Telecom Mobile, Pronto GSM or Manx, while some handsets show 234-58 or UK-58 instead. Any of those means you're connected to the right network.

If your phone shows something else, open network selection and pick one of those names by hand.

Our catalogue lists the plan at 4G. Sure by Beyon also runs a network on the island and said in October 2025 that its 5G would start arriving in 2026. Our plan does not run on Sure, so that rollout won't change what you get.

02 Is the Isle of Man roaming for a UK phone?

It can be. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency and not part of the United Kingdom, so UK networks bill it under their own roaming rules. Manx Telecom itself warns that some UK operators have cut back inclusive roaming, so visitors may pay extra depending on their provider.

Manx Telecom suggests that visitors on those plans buy one of its own SIM cards, which include roaming in the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the EU. Visitors from the EU get no help from EU roaming rules here either, because the island is outside that agreement. Look up the island by name on your own network's roaming page before you sail or fly.

03 Will mobile data slow down during the TT?

It can. Manx Telecom calls TT one of its busiest times of year and has said some customers may have connectivity issues. In August 2026 its chief executive told Isle of Man Today that the network cannot realistically be built for the roughly 120,000 visitors TT brings.

He also said speeds vary with how many people share the same mast, and that work is under way at 11 existing sites, with plans for 8 more. TT 2027 runs from Monday 31 May to Saturday 12 June, and the provisional dates for 2028 are Monday 29 May to Saturday 10 June.

During race weeks, download offline maps of the island before you arrive and save big uploads for wifi at your accommodation. Messages and maps use little data, so they tend to cope better than video when the network is busy.

04 Arriving from the UK or Ireland: do you need two plans?

Yes, if you want data on both sides of the Irish Sea. Our Europe plan covers the UK and Ireland but not the Isle of Man, and this plan covers the island. Neither plan starts its days until it first connects somewhere it covers.

On the Steam Packet ferries Manxman and Manannan, every passenger gets 100MB of free wifi, and more can be bought in the onboard shop. That is enough for messages on the crossing, though not for streaming.

Our Global plan also includes the Isle of Man, at $10.64 for 1 GB over 7 days. It suits a longer trip through several countries, while this plan gives the same 1 GB and 7 days for $1.74.

05 Which Isle of Man plan should you pick?

Choose by data, because there's no unlimited plan for the Isle of Man at the moment. A quiet week of walking and sightseeing needs little, while a TT visit with lots of photo and video sharing is where the bigger plans earn their keep.

Everything you need to know about our Isle of Man eSIM.

Manx Telecom Mobile, Pronto GSM or Manx, and some phones show 234-58 or UK-58 instead. Each of these is Pronto GSM, the Manx Telecom network our plan uses. If your phone lands on anything else, pick one of those names by hand in network selection.

Mostly good, with some gaps. Manx Telecom describes its coverage as generally very good except in some mountainous or remote areas, and it advertises 99% 4G coverage. Before a long walk in the hills, download offline maps of the island in case the signal drops.

It can at busy spots. Manx Telecom calls TT one of its busiest times of year, and its chief executive has said the network cannot realistically be built for around 120,000 visitors. TT 2027 runs from 31 May to 12 June, so save big uploads for WiFi where you stay.
