Which Hungarian network will my phone use, and where does it stop?

Yes, an eSIM works across Hungary, and ours runs on Yettel and One, both listed with 5G in our catalogue. You may know them by their old names, Telenor and Vodafone. Budapest adds a quirk worth knowing: its official transport app needs live mobile data to buy, use and check your tickets.

01 Telenor and Vodafone are gone: who are Yettel and One?

They are the same two networks under new names. Telenor Hungary became Yettel on 1 March 2022, and Vodafone Hungary became One on 1 January 2025, about two years after Hungarian owners bought it. Our plan page still lists them as Telenor Hungary and Vodafone, and both carry 5G in our catalogue.

Yettel said at the time that the new name did not change the availability of its services. If you ever choose a network by hand in your phone settings, pick Yettel or One, since those are the two our plan uses.

02 Why Budapest transport tickets need data on your phone

Because BKK, the Budapest transport authority, says an active mobile data connection is required to buy, use and verify mobile tickets in its BudapestGO app. A ticket bought over hotel WiFi still needs data on the tram when an inspector checks it.

The app sells single tickets, 24 hour and 72 hour travelcards and monthly passes. To validate, you scan the displayed code, or hold the phone 1 to 3 cm from the NFC sticker so an animated image appears for the driver or staff. At metro stations, a Metro stations button replaces the scan.

On a short city break, a daily unlimited plan keeps this simple. The 3 day plan, at $2.65, gives full speed up to 1 GB a day, then up to 1 Mbps.

03 Going on to Vienna, Bratislava or Croatia from Hungary

Your Hungary plan stops at the border, because it only uses Hungarian networks. Hungary borders Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, and our Europe plan covers five of them, all but Serbia and Ukraine. For Vienna or Bratislava, the Europe plan is the better buy.

It starts at $1.99 for 1 GB over 7 days, and the Europe plan page lists all 34 countries. Serbia and Ukraine need a plan of their own.

Visitors with a SIM from another EU country may not need us at all. Hungary is in the EU, so roam like at home rules let you use your home data there at the same price as at home. Serbia is outside the EU and not on the roam like at home list, so that pricing ends at the Serbian border.

04 From a Budapest weekend to a semester: which plan?

Most Budapest breaks fit a small fixed plan, while the unlimited plans suit anyone who streams or shares a lot each day. If you are studying or working in Hungary for months, look at the 50 GB plan, which runs for 180 days.

Stay Plan Price
A city break of 2 to 4 days1 GB for 7 days$1.29
One or two weeks3 GB for 15 days$2.10
A month with maps, music and video calls10 GB for 30 days$5.99
Heavy daily use for a weekUnlimited: 3 GB a day at full speed, then up to 1 Mbps$16.66
A semester or long stay50 GB for 180 days$30.80

For a month of lighter use, 5 GB for 30 days costs $3.33.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Hungary eSIM.

Yes, they are the same two networks renamed. Telenor Hungary turned into Yettel in March 2022, and Vodafone Hungary turned into One in January 2025. Our plan page keeps the old labels, Telenor Hungary and Vodafone, but these are the two networks our plan uses, each with 5G.

Yes. As an EU member, Hungary falls under roam like at home, so an EU operator charges your data there as it would at home, within fair use limits. The cover ends at the Serbian border. Serbia is not in the EU, and EU roaming rules do not apply there.

No. BKK says BudapestGO needs an active mobile data connection to buy, use and verify mobile tickets. That covers single tickets, 24 and 72 hour travelcards and monthly passes, so keep mobile data on while you ride and an inspector can check your ticket there and then.
