Georgetown to the interior: where your phone will work in Guyana

Yes, an eSIM works in Guyana, and ours runs on Digicel's 4G network. What makes Guyana different is the gap between the coast and the interior. Guyana Tourism's own FAQ says internet is widely available in towns but limited in remote areas, so plan your data around where you'll be as well as how long you'll stay.

01 Which Guyana networks are there, and which is ours?

Guyana has three mobile networks: Digicel, ONE Communications and E-Networks. Our plan uses Digicel's 4G. ONE Communications is the former GTT, which changed its name on 5 September 2024, so older guides still call it GTT. If your phone finds no network, choose Digicel by hand in network settings.

Digicel has pushed 4G beyond the coast in places. It launched LTE in Lethem, in Region 9, in August 2022.

02 Will I get signal at Kaieteur or in the Rupununi?

Expect gaps once you leave the towns. In September 2026 President Irfaan Ali told the phone companies they must invest more in the hinterland. Local reporting at the time said villages such as Imbotero, near the Venezuelan border, had no sustained service from any of the three, only WhatsApp over satellite internet such as Starlink.

The Prime Minister has also asked the providers to put towers on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, which tells you coverage there is still being filled in. Before a flight or drive inland, ask your lodge what internet it has, and sort the basics:

03 Fixed data or a daily plan for a long stay in Guyana?

Pick by days first, then by data. For a short visit, 1 GB for 7 days at $6.86 covers maps and messages. For a month of work or family visits, 5 GB costs $32.10, 10 GB costs $54.03 and 20 GB costs $111.76, each valid for 30 days.

  Data Days Price
Short visit1 GB7$6.86
Two weeks3 GB15$16.86
A month, light use3 GB30$19.32
A month, regular use10 GB30$54.03
A month with laptop work20 GB30$111.76

The daily plans give full speed up to 3 GB per day, then up to 1 Mbps. One day costs $25.35, but a full month costs $760.62, far more than 20 GB at $111.76, so fixed plans suit long stays. If you work on office wifi and use mobile data only on the move, 3 GB over 30 days at $19.32 may be enough. For laptop work, see how to share your eSIM data as a hotspot.

04 No service in Georgetown? Settings to check

On the coast, check your phone's settings before blaming coverage. Make sure the eSIM line is switched on and set as your mobile data line, and turn on data roaming for that line. If nothing connects, pick Digicel manually in network settings, then restart the phone and give it a minute.

If it still shows no service, our eSIM troubleshooting guide walks through the less common causes. The plan's days only start once it first connects to a network in Guyana, so time spent fixing settings doesn't eat into them.

Keep your home SIM switched on if you need texts from your bank, but turn off data roaming on that line. Our plan is data only, so calls and messages go over apps such as WhatsApp, and your home operator won't bill you for data you didn't mean to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Guyana eSIM.

Yes. GTT changed its name to ONE Communications on 5 September 2024, so older guides still use the old name. Our plan doesn't use it, though. It runs on Digicel's 4G, one of Guyana's three mobile networks along with ONE Communications and E-Networks.

Not reliably. Guyana Tourism's own advice is that roaming works mainly in urban areas, and that internet is limited in remote parts of the country. Thin coverage inland affects every network, including the Digicel 4G our plan uses, so treat inland days as mostly offline.

Yes, Digicel launched LTE in Lethem, in Region 9, in August 2022, and our plan runs on Digicel. Beyond the towns, service thins out. Reporting in September 2026 described hinterland villages with no sustained service from any of Guyana's three networks.
