Holafly eSIM Not Working? How to Fix It

Aug 13, 2026  · Updated  · Written by Enola Soha  · 12

Nine checks that fix almost every Holafly eSIM problem, including the daily hotspot cap and the speed reduction that often looks like a fault.

You land, switch on your Holafly eSIM and nothing loads. It tends to happen at arrivals, right when you need a taxi app. In most cases nothing is broken. A setting on the phone is wrong, and you can put it right yourself in a few minutes.

Go through the checks below from the top. The first ones cause most of the trouble, so there is a good chance you are online again well before the end.

Holafly changes its plans now and then, so check the current details on its own site.

1. Roaming is off on the Holafly line

Do I need to turn on roaming for Holafly eSIMs?

Yes. A Holafly eSIM connects through a local partner network, and your phone treats that as roaming. Data roaming has to be on for the Holafly line or you get no data at all. Leave it off on your home SIM so your normal carrier never bills you.

Nothing causes more no data problems than this. Your Holafly eSIM uses a local network in the country you are visiting, and your phone treats that as roaming. With roaming off on that line, no data gets through.

On iPhone: open Settings, go to Cellular, tap your Holafly line and turn on Data Roaming.

On Android: open Settings, go to Network and internet, then SIMs, tap your Holafly line and turn on Roaming. Samsung phones keep it under Settings, then Connections, then Mobile networks, then Data roaming.

This will not run up a bill. Holafly is paid for in advance and your home carrier has nothing to do with it. The line to watch is your home SIM, so leave roaming off on that one.

2. Data is still going through your home SIM

Why is my Holafly cellular data not working when the signal looks fine?

Because the bars can be coming from your home SIM while the Holafly line sits idle. A phone shows one set of bars but sends data down whichever line you picked for cellular data. Point that setting at Holafly and the connection appears.

An eSIM can install without any problem while your phone carries on using your home SIM for data. Plenty of people only find out when the roaming charges arrive.

On iPhone: go to Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data, and choose the Holafly line.

On Android: go to Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, and make Holafly the preferred SIM for mobile data.

On an iPhone, also check that Allow Cellular Data Switching is off. With it on, the phone can slip back to your home SIM whenever the Holafly signal dips.

3. The Holafly plan has not started yet

How can I tell if my Holafly eSIM is working?

Open your Holafly account and check the plan reads as active and is inside its validity window. On the phone, the Holafly line should show a carrier name rather than No Service. If either of those is missing, the plan has not started yet.

Travel eSIMs usually start their clock the first time they connect in the country you are visiting, not on the day you pay. So if you installed Holafly but never turned roaming on after landing, the plan may not have started yet.

Open the Holafly app or your account and check that the plan is active and how many days it has left. On an unlimited plan the end date matters more than how much data you have used. If the plan has already expired, no setting will bring it back.

4. The phone has not picked a local network

Why did my Holafly eSIM suddenly stop working?

An eSIM that worked and then died has usually lost its network rather than its plan. Phones drop a partner network when you cross a border or leave coverage, then fail to pick a new one automatically. Choosing an operator by hand brings it back.

Right after landing, a phone sometimes fails to choose a local network by itself.

  1. Switch airplane mode on, count to ten, then switch it off again. The phone then searches for networks from scratch, and that alone fixes a lot of cases.
  2. If that does not work, pick the network yourself. On iPhone go to Settings, then Cellular, tap the line, then Network Selection, turn off Automatic and choose one from the list. On Android look under Mobile networks, then Network operators.
  3. Wait two or three minutes after each change before you try the next one.

5. The Holafly APN is missing or mistyped

What are the Holafly APN settings on iPhone and Android?

Holafly gives the APN in your activation email and in your account, and it changes by destination, so copy it from there rather than from a forum post. On iPhone it sits under Cellular Data Network. On Android it is under Access Point Names. One wrong character stops data.

Now and then the APN does not set itself up. You will find the right one in the setup instructions or in the email you got when you bought the plan.

On iPhone: go to Settings, then Cellular, tap the line, then Cellular Data Network.

On Android: go to Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Access Point Names.

Enter it exactly as written, without extra spaces or capital letters. If there is no APN field on your iPhone at all, the carrier settings for that line have hidden it. Ask Holafly support to check the profile.

6. The Holafly QR code will not install

Why will the Holafly QR code not install?

Usually one of three things. The code has already been used, because a QR code installs once and once only. Or the phone is not eSIM capable or is locked to a carrier. Or there is no internet connection to complete the download.

  • Connect to wifi first. The eSIM profile downloads from the internet, so it cannot come through the connection you are still trying to set up.
  • The QR code cannot be scanned from the screen of the phone you are installing it on. Open the email on a laptop or another phone, or type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code by hand.
  • A message saying the code is already used means the profile went on once before. Most eSIM profiles only install one time, so Holafly has to send you a new one.

7. The hotspot cap and other Holafly rules

Why has my Holafly hotspot stopped working?

Holafly allows hotspot sharing but limits it, to 1 GB a day on many of its travel eSIMs, with the figure for each destination in the plan's technical specs. If your laptop lost its connection while your phone stayed online, you have hit that cap. It resets the next day.

Holafly sells unlimited plans rather than fixed sizes, which changes what "not working" usually means. You are far less likely to have run out of data, and far more likely to be looking at a speed reduction under their fair use policy. A connection that loads text but stalls on video is the classic sign.

Because there is no data counter to check in the usual sense, it is worth confirming in your Holafly account that the plan is inside its validity window before you spend time on settings.

8. Holafly connects but everything is slow

Why is my Holafly data so slow?

Slow but working is often policy rather than a fault. Holafly's FAQ says a local network can slow you down under a fair use policy, and that the slowdown lasts no more than a day. No setting on the phone lifts it. If only your laptop crawls while the phone is fine, the daily sharing cap is the likely reason.

If neither applies, your phone may be on a weaker local network. Flip airplane mode, or pick another operator by hand as described in step four. Poor signal slows everything too, so move nearer a window before you blame the plan.

9. When the fault is on Holafly's side

How can I tell if Holafly itself is down?

Real outages are uncommon and rarely hit one person alone. Before you assume one, restart the phone and try a different part of town. If it fails everywhere, send Holafly support the times and places you tried.

When every step above is done and there is still no data, the fault is usually in how the eSIM was set up on Holafly's side, not in your phone. Contact Holafly support with your order number and list what you have already tried. It saves you going through the basic script again.

Ask them two things: does the plan show as active on their system, and can they send a new profile if the first one failed.

Holafly very slow? Read this before you blame the network

Holafly eSIM not working on Samsung or Android?

Android spreads these controls across several menus, so they are easier to miss. Check SIM manager to confirm the Holafly line is set for mobile data, switch data roaming on for that line, then check the APN under Access Point Names.

When a fair use slowdown hits, the connection does not drop. Messages still send, images load slowly and video stalls. If the slowdown started while you were tethering a laptop, the daily sharing cap is the more likely cause.

Before concluding you are throttled, rule out the ordinary suspects: run a speed test standing near a window, toggle airplane mode for ten seconds, and try manual selection of a different local network, congestion on one tower reads exactly like a provider problem. If full speed returns on another network, it was never Holafly. If the slowness follows you everywhere and started after heavy use, that is the fair use policy doing what the small print said it would, and no setting on the phone lifts it. For the next trip, pick a plan whose limits match how you use data. Our unlimited data plans show the daily full speed amount and the speed after it on the plan page.

The Holafly fix list in seven steps

How do I fix an eSIM that is not working?

Work through it in order. Data roaming on, correct line chosen for data, home SIM roaming off, airplane mode off and on, network picked by hand, APN matching the provider, plan showing as active. That sequence clears almost every case in about three minutes.

  1. Roaming switched on for the Holafly line.
  2. Holafly chosen as the line for mobile data.
  3. Home SIM data roaming OFF.
  4. Airplane mode switched on, then off.
  5. A network picked by hand if automatic does not work.
  6. APN matching the provider's instructions.
  7. Plan shown as active in the Holafly app.

Other Holafly eSIM questions

Why is my travel eSIM not working even though it installed fine?

Installing and connecting are two separate steps. A profile can sit on the phone perfectly while data roaming is off, the wrong line is set for data, or the plan has not been started. Installation only proves the download worked.

Can I use a Holafly eSIM and my normal SIM at the same time?

Yes, and most people should. Keep your home number active for calls and messages, set the travel eSIM as the line for cellular data, and switch data roaming off on the home line so your usual carrier cannot charge you.

Does deleting and reinstalling a Holafly eSIM fix it?

Rarely, and it can make things worse. Most QR codes install once only, so removing a working profile can leave you with nothing to reinstall. Try every setting first and contact support before you delete anything.

What happens when a Holafly plan expires?

The plan stops and the profile stays on your phone doing nothing. An expired plan looks identical to a broken one, which is why checking the validity window is worth doing before you spend time on settings.

Is Airalo better than Holafly?

They are built differently rather than one being better. Holafly sells unlimited plans with a daily hotspot cap and fair use throttling. Airalo sells fixed data amounts you can watch go down. Which suits you depends on whether you would rather not think about a counter or would rather see exactly what is left.
