Armenia travel data eSIM

What Is an Armenia eSIM?

An Armenia eSIM is a digital data plan that gives your phone mobile internet across Armenia without a physical SIM card. You buy a plan, scan a QR code, and you are online. No plastic SIM, no airport queues.

Your home SIM stays in your phone, so you keep your normal number for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data. Cheaper than roaming, faster than finding a SIM shop when you land.

Armenia eSIM: Viva Coverage, the Georgia Border, and What It Actually Costs

Armenia is one of the places where travel eSIM prices vary wildly, so it is worth comparing properly rather than buying the first brand you recognise. This guide names the network we run on, is honest about coverage at Tatev and in the southern gorges, explains why an Armenia plan stops dead at the Georgian border, and tells you why a streaming service may think you are in the UK.

01 Which network does an Armenia eSIM use?

Ours runs on Viva, on 5G. Armenia has three operators, Viva, Ucom and Team, and Viva has the broadest reach of the three, particularly outside Yerevan.

That matters because Armenia is a mountainous country where a lot of what visitors come for, monasteries, gorges, Dilijan, Tatev, sits in terrain that does not suit mobile coverage. On the main roads and in the towns you will be fine. On the approach roads to some of the older monasteries you will not, on any network.

We name the network so you can check what we say against what other travellers report, rather than taking a marketing line on trust.

02 Will it work outside Yerevan, at Tatev and Dilijan?

In Yerevan, Gyumri, Dilijan, Sevan and along the main highways, yes, comfortably, and mostly on 4G with 5G in the capital.

At the well known sights it varies with the terrain rather than the distance. Garni and Geghard are close to Yerevan and generally fine. Tatev, Noravank and the deeper gorges are genuinely patchy because they sit down in valleys, and the cable car at Tatev crosses a gorge where you should expect nothing.

  • Yerevan: strong throughout, 5G widely
  • Gyumri, Dilijan, Sevan, Vanadzor: good
  • Garni and Geghard: generally fine, occasional dips
  • Tatev, Noravank and the southern gorges: patchy, expect gaps
  • The Armenian Highlands and border roads: thin on every network

Download offline maps before you set off for a day of monasteries. The drives are long and the interesting parts are usually down a valley.

03 How much does an Armenia eSIM cost?

The whole fixed range with the price per gigabyte worked out.

Plan Price Per GB
1 GB for 7 days$1.74$1.74
3 GB for 15 days$4.10$1.37
3 GB for 30 days$4.35$1.45
5 GB for 30 days$6.83$1.37
10 GB for 30 days$12.47$1.25

Worked out on 21 September 2026. Most Armenia trips run a week to ten days, often combined with Georgia, so the 5 GB plan at $6.83 covers the majority comfortably.

04 How does our price compare with Airalo?

Checked on 30 September 2026 in US dollars on Airalo's own Armenia page. Armenia is one of the places where the gap between travel eSIM providers is unusually wide.

Plan MegaEsimBest choice Airalo
1 GB$1.74 (7 days)$5.00 (3 days)
3 GB$4.35 (30 days)$15.00 (7 days)
5 GB for 30 days$6.83$25.00
10 GB for 30 days$12.47$39.00

Prices move. If one of these is cheaper on the day you read this, buy the cheaper one.

05 Why does a website think I am in the United Kingdom?

Because our Armenia plans route their data out through the UK. That is what a streaming service, a bank app or any geo located site sees, rather than Armenia.

For normal use, browsing, maps, messaging and social, it changes nothing at all. Where you might notice it is a streaming library showing you UK content, or a banking app that is fussy about which country it thinks you are in.

Almost nobody selling travel eSIMs publishes this. We do, because finding out at the wrong moment is worse than knowing in advance. If you specifically need to appear to be in Armenia, a local SIM is the reliable answer.

06 Travelling to Armenia and Georgia on the same trip?

Most people do, and the two countries need two plans. An Armenia plan stops at the border and a Georgia plan will not connect until you are through it.

The land crossing at Bagratashen and Sadakhlo is where this bites, because you leave the vehicle, clear both sides on foot, and that is exactly when you want to message whoever is meeting you. Install both plans before you leave home and switch which line carries data once you are across. It takes seconds and needs no signal.

Our Georgia plans run on Magti and are covered on the Georgia eSIM page, including an honest comparison against a local Georgian SIM.

07 Should I buy a local SIM in Armenia instead?

For a stay of a month or more, probably. Armenian prepaid data is inexpensive and Viva and Ucom shops are easy to find in Yerevan.

You will need your passport, because registration is required. Airport desks exist at Zvartnots but hours do not reliably cover late arrivals, and many flights into Yerevan land in the small hours.

For a week or ten days, the eSIM is simpler and the difference in money is small. The thing it genuinely buys you is walking out of Zvartnots at three in the morning already connected.

08 Is it worth getting an eSIM for Armenia?

Coming from Europe, North America or the Gulf, yes. Armenia is outside every roaming arrangement you are likely to have and standard rates here are high.

Arrival is the stronger argument. A lot of flights into Yerevan arrive between midnight and four in the morning, which is precisely when you do not want to be negotiating a taxi without data or hunting for a SIM desk that is closed.

  • Worth it: arriving from outside the region, where roaming is expensive
  • Worth it: a late night arrival at Zvartnots, which most long haul routes are
  • Worth it: combining Armenia with Georgia, where you will want both plans ready
  • Probably not: a month or more, where a local SIM is cheaper once registered
  • Probably not: you already hold a regional plan listing Armenia

09 How much data do you need in Armenia?

A week of normal travel is 2 GB to 4 GB. Armenia is a country of long drives between sights, so maps run more than you expect, but there is less constant app use than in a big city destination.

How you travel A week Ten days Plan to look at
Yerevan and day trips2 to 3 GB3 to 5 GB$4.35 for 3 GB
Touring with photos daily3 to 5 GB5 to 8 GB$6.83 for 5 GB
Add video calls home5 to 8 GB8 to 12 GB$12.47 for 10 GB

If you are doing Armenia and Georgia together, size each plan for its own leg rather than buying one large plan and hoping.

10 Do I get an Armenian phone number?

No. These are data plans, so no number and no texts or calls to a normal number. WhatsApp, Telegram and Viber all work over the data, and Viber in particular is widely used across the region.

If you need a local number for a guesthouse or a driver to ring you, buy a local SIM with your passport. Keep your home SIM on for bank codes with its data roaming switched off.

11 Do I turn data roaming on or off?

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. The instinct to leave it off is backwards and it is the most common reason a working eSIM looks broken.

A travel eSIM is a foreign profile on an Armenian partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming permanently. With the setting off it shows signal and moves no data. It is per line, so your home SIM is unaffected.

Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data with roaming on, home SIM on for texts with its own roaming off.

12 How do I install an Armenia eSIM?

Five minutes on wifi before you fly, using the QR code we email after payment. Do it at home, because a three in the morning arrival at Zvartnots is not the moment.

  • Check the phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID
  • Open the QR code on a second screen or print it
  • iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
  • Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM
  • Label it Armenia, and if you are also doing Georgia label that one too
  • Set it as the line for mobile data and switch its data roaming on

On arrival give it two or three minutes. If nothing happens, toggle airplane mode once, then check the eSIM line is selected for mobile data.

Keep the email. The profile cannot move to another phone and the code will not scan twice.

13 When does my Armenia plan start counting?

When the eSIM first connects to an Armenian network, not at purchase and not at install.

That is useful on a Caucasus trip, because it means you can install both your Armenia and Georgia plans at home and neither starts burning days until you actually reach that country.

The clock then runs in calendar days rather than 24 hour blocks from first use.

14 Who should not buy this plan

If you are staying a month or more, buy a Viva or Ucom SIM with your passport once you arrive. It will cost less over that period than any travel eSIM including ours.

If you need to appear to be located in Armenia for a bank app or a streaming service, our traffic exits in the UK and a local SIM is the reliable answer.

And if your phone is carrier locked, nothing here will work. Check with *#06# first.

15 The honest verdict on an Armenia eSIM

For a week or ten days in Armenia, usually combined with Georgia, this is a straightforward buy and $6.83 for 5 GB over 30 days covers most of it.

Armenia happens to be one of the places where travel eSIM prices vary wildly, so it is worth comparing properly rather than buying the first brand you recognise. We are considerably below Airalo here, which is not something we can say about every country.

Where we would send you elsewhere: a long stay, where a local SIM wins, and anything that needs a real Armenian number or an Armenian IP address.
