Roshan, blackouts and backups: staying reachable in Afghanistan

Yes. Our Afghanistan plan connects to Roshan at up to 4G, and it works anywhere Roshan has signal. What makes Afghanistan different is that the authorities have switched connectivity off before, including a nationwide blackout in 2025 that lasted two days and took mobile data down too. So plan for gaps as well as for gigabytes.

01 Which network does the eSIM use in Afghanistan?

It uses Roshan, at up to 4G. Roshan has operated since 2003 and, as of June 2024, had service in at least one city in every province. Our plan only uses Roshan, so if Roshan has no mast where you are, you have no data, even when another network shows bars.

You will see other names on shop signs. Etisalat Afghanistan and Afghan Wireless (AWCC) are the other big private operators, and Salaam is the mobile brand of Afghan Telecom. ATOMA is the former MTN network: MTN handed its Afghan business to Lebanon's M1 Group in April 2025, and the brand changed.

Service in every province is not the same as signal along every road. Before a drive between cities, download offline maps and save the addresses you need.

02 Can mobile data be cut off while I'm there?

Yes, and it has happened. On 29 September 2025 the Taliban authorities imposed a nationwide telecoms shutdown. Mobile networks went down along with fixed internet, and service returned on 1 October. During a shutdown like that, no eSIM, local SIM or roaming plan will get you online.

It started with home and office internet. From 16 September 2025, fibre internet was banned in Balkh and then several other provinces while mobile data kept working. In May 2026 the authorities ordered residential fibre in Kabul to be cut. Guesthouse WiFi can vanish with little warning, which leaves mobile data as your main link.

03 What does official travel advice say about Afghanistan?

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Afghanistan. There is no British Embassy there, so it cannot give help in person. If you still go, your phone becomes part of your safety plan, which is why the offline backups above matter more than the size of your data plan.

Check your own government's advice before you book, and read your travel insurance terms for Afghanistan before you rely on them.

04 How do I call home without an Afghan number?

Over apps. Our Afghanistan plans are data only, with no local number, so calls and messages go through internet apps using Roshan data. Your home SIM can stay on in the same phone for texts such as bank codes, as long as your home network roams in Afghanistan.

If you need an Afghan number, you need a local SIM. SIMs must now be registered, and the regulator ATRA has stopped roadside sales, so registered SIMs come from the operators' own offices. For how app calling works day to day, see calls and texts on a data only eSIM.

05 Picking a plan length for Afghanistan

Choose by days first, then by data. The shortest plan is 1 GB for 7 days at $2.22, enough for messages and maps over a week. Everything else runs 15 or 30 days. No regional plan includes Afghanistan, so a trip that continues into a neighbouring country needs a second plan.

  Plan Price
One week, messages and maps1 GB, 7 days$2.22
Up to two weeks3 GB, 15 days$5.57
A month, light use3 GB, 30 days$5.92
A month with video calls5 GB or 10 GB, 30 days$9.28 or $16.94

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Afghanistan eSIM.

In many cities, yes. Roshan reached at least one city in each province as of June 2024, and Roshan is the only network our plan uses. Roads between cities are a different matter, so save offline maps and addresses before any long drive.

It left the country. In April 2025 MTN passed its Afghan operation to M1 Group of Lebanon, and the network now trades as ATOMA. If you see ATOMA signs, that is the former MTN. Our plan does not use it, only Roshan.

No. In the nationwide shutdown from 29 September to 1 October 2025, both mobile and fixed internet went dark. Every eSIM, local SIM and roaming line relies on those same networks. If you are going anyway, make sure someone at home knows your route and what to do if you go quiet.
